Tonight I had the pleasure of watching a film I had never seen before called Swingers. It's about 15 years old but the theme behind the romantic comedy theme still rings true. It's clear to anybody in a professional mind set that the deeper meaning behind the movie. It is essentially about the growth of a man trying to advance his acting career through networking. In the movie getting out and meeting new people is a major part. Although it is supposed to be about getting over his ex it is more about getting out there and selling his brand and himself as an actor. He simultaneously does this without really knowing, which is evident near the end of the movie when he confidently hands his business card to a woman he is trying to get with. At this point he is at peak performance, unlike earlier in the film where he is fumbling around and not genuinely selling himself as an actor ready to work. It's clear that being cool, calm and confident, like when trying to find a date, is the best formula to sell yourself and brand when looking for work in any respective industry. Honestly, by looking at this film from this perspective I can now take notes on the success, (and many failures) of Mike and apply it to my networking game.
